Sociologist/Criminologist
Dr Sloane completed her PhD in sociology at the University of Essex. Prior to her PhD, she obtained a Masters degree (LLM) in Human Rights Law at Birkbeck, University of London, and her undergraduate degree in Law (LLB) at the University of Benin, Nigeria, West Africa. She also qualified as a Barrister at the Nigeria Law School in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2011. Dr Sloane primarily concentrates her research on the Global South, with a specific focus on Sub-Saharan Africans both in their home countries and in the diaspora. She is interested in the intersection of power, identity and resistance in these fields of interest:
All forms of gender-based violence, including domestic or intimate partner violence and female genital mutilation (FGM).
Decoloniality - epistemic decoloniality and injustice, feminist and decolonial jurisprudence, legacies of decoloniality.
Sociology of race - racial injustice, racialised spaces, anti-blackness, racial stereotypes and media representations, and critical race theory.
Social connectedness - the quality and diversity of social engagement and participation in Britain, social isolation of marginalised identities, belonging, and how marginalised identities establish and sustain social connections and relationships.
Migration and border violence.
Hate crimes motivated by bias against race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Dr Sloane’s expertise in Black and indigenous feminisms, decoloniality and the challenges faced by marginalised groups stands at the forefront of her academic and research endeavours. Her doctoral thesis titled “Hostile Environment Policy, Intimate Partner Violence and Resilience among sub-Saharan Migrant Women Living in the UK.” was her pioneering study in this area, exploring the nuanced dynamics of gender and race through a decolonial feminist lens and the intersections of power, identity and resistance. This work has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of how colonial histories continue to shape identities and relations in and outside contemporary Britain.
In her teaching roles, she has taught and led courses specifically focusing on decolonising perceptions and approaches to crimes by and against indigenous and other marginalised communities. She is also involved in faculty or university-level EDI committees, highlighting her dedication to excellence and diversity in higher education research and scholarship.
In addition to this, beyond academia, Dr Sloane has been actively involved in community engagement and advocacy work related to indigenous communities. This has included collaborating with community organisations, contributing to policy discussions, and participating in public speaking events. Her aim has always been to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application, ensuring that the insights gained through her work have a tangible impact on society.
