Criminologist and Gender Development Practitioner
Dr Yemisi Sloane is a researcher, criminologist and Assistant Professor in Criminology, whose work centres on gender-based violence against women and girls, with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Her research critically examines the experiences of women and girls across both local and diasporic contexts, drawing on feminist and decolonial frameworks to explore how they navigate the intersections of power, identity, and resistance in their experiences of violence.
Positioned at the intersection of law, criminology, and sociology, Dr Sloane’s research centres the voices and experiences of marginalised populations, while critically challenging universalist approaches to understanding gendered violence and victimisation. Her legal background also brings a distinctive socio-legal lens to analyse how law and policy can both protect and endanger women, particularly in digital, securitised or transnational spaces.
Research Interests:
Gender-based violence, including domestic or intimate partner violence, femicide, sexual violence, female genital mutilation (FGM), technology-facilitated violence.
Gendered Violence in Conflict.
Human Trafficking and Exploitation.
Feminist Jurisprudence – The study and critique of how legal and justice systems may reinforce gendered harm.
Sociology of Race - Racial injustice, racial media stereotypes and critical race theory.
Social inclusion and connectedness - the quality and diversity of social engagement and participation in Britain, including how marginalized identities establish and sustain social connections and relationships.
Dr Sloane has taught and led courses on feminist criminology, jurisprudence, transnational organised crime, and international criminal law. She has also actively contributed to faculty and university-level Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committees, reflecting her commitment to inclusive teaching and scholarship. She is currently a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Criminology and Policing at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.
Beyond academia, Dr Sloane remains active as a Gender Development Practitioner (GDP) and has been an active contributor at national and international conferences, seminars and training sessions. She is the Founder and CEO of Progressive Dialogue International, an organisation dedicated to promoting open, collaborative, and inclusive discussions on social justice, gender equality, and inclusive approaches to knowledge and advocacy through training programs and community engagement. Her collaborative efforts with NGOs, activists, and policymakers extend beyond the UK to other countries in Africa, Europe and Asia, marking her as a global advocate in her field. Her aim has always been to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world experiences, ensuring that the insights gained through her research and activism have a tangible impact on society.
